STOLEN BEER
MAORIS DRINK 26 BOTTLES Two young Maoris, Toni Tipcne and Pongi Tamaki, admitted in the Te Awamutu Court the theft of 26 bottles of beer, valued at £2 7s 3d, from the clubhouse of the Pokuru Golf Club on the night of June 2. They were fined by Messrs L. G. Armstrong and W. Jeffery, J.’sP., £3 and £2 respectively. Tipene was also fined- £5 for the theft of 66 bottles of beer \ from the clubhouse a month previously, a charge that he admitted. Sergeant S. G. Clist, prosecuting, said the 2,6 bottles of beer were taken to Tamaki’s house, where with the help of some girls all but three or four bottles were consumed between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. Sergeant Clist said this type of offence was becoming more and more prevalent, especially among Maoris. Most of the young Maoris’ earnings seemed to go in strong drink and taxi fares. “They are getting too much money and too much drink,” he said, when Tipene had admitted having received over £2O from a drain contract. The Bench told both accused they were lucky not to be charged witn breaking and entering.
