DEPOSITS OF MICA

DISCOVERY ON WEST COAST (By Telegraph.—Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, Monday The discovery of extensive mica deposits in South Westland was confirmed by the Minister of Mines, the Hon. P. C. Webb, today. He said a preliminary examination by geologists had indicated that the deposits were of sufficient importance to warrant a detailed survey. The deposits existed on the Mataketake Range at elevations from 4000 ft to 5000 ft. The Minister said mica was essential for various classes of electrical equipment and was specially needed in making washers for spark plugs in aeroplane engines. It was, therefore, a highly important strategic war mineral which was in short supply at present.
