DOUBLE PETER WINS RAILWAY TO DAVEY DAY SURPRISE BY AIXTAZAR The February meeting of the Auckland Trotting Club was staged at Alexandra Park Fpsoir, on Satin day in fine weathe before a large attendance, a feature of the meeting being the success of Double Pete: and Alcazar in the big double, the latter winning after an appreciable section of the field *went out of the contest when they became involved in a sensational smash. Symphony showed improved form to beat the hot favourite Pacing Power, in the Great Northern Tiotting Derby. Following are the concluding results:— MT. Winner trained by S. M. August, Green Lane. There was a thrilling finish in the Mt. Albert Handicap. Flower Potts led into the straight by a length and just held on to get the verdict by ball - a length from Ayrshire Scott, and Parshall was threequarters of a length away third. With hall' the distance covered Flower Potts was running outside two sulkies, but then moved up smartly and took command four rurlongs from home. Erua Peter was nearest, and then came Courier, Katoomba and Cam D<*rby. The mare was still in command when the straight was reached, and she went on to score nicely. Ayrshire Scot beat her stablemate, Parshall, for second money. Courier was Tourth, and then came Dave Opal and Rockfel. Times 3.18 3-5, 3.20 4-5, 3.22 1-5. The race does not lend ltseir to description, for early the three horses that eventually filled the places were all clear of the others and when Douglas McElwyn left his feet in the final two furlongs Rangefinder’s driver appeared to be too easy or. the Frank Worthy gelding, and Douglas McElwyn, settling down again quicklv. challenged resolutely, to wrest the lead and go oil to victory by a length and a-quarter rrom Rangefinder, who beat Gaynor by a length for second money. Davey Day, who won well at the Christinas meeting, again proved what a great pacer he is when he outclassed the opposition. His driver seemed content to let nun run along the outside, but when an etrort was needed Davey Day raced past the opposition and won on a tight rein. Shadow Son was first to show out, but Belfast Jack soon raced past him. and Proletarian, Franco and Passing By were in close attendance. With a mile covered Claypot and Belfast Jark were 1n charge from Davey Day, Shadow Son and Franco. Across the top Davey Day was in command, from Belfast Jack, Shadow Son and Claypot, and in the run lo tiie judge Davey Day was always going like a winner to score from Shadow son. Winner trained by W. E. Coekbill, Hamilton. The race provided a sensation. About hair a mile from home there was a disastrous smash, seven or eight horses being brought down. ATter travelling three Tur longs Lady Amanda was in charge rrom Isabella Pointer, Shadow Son, Lough Derg and Imperial Jade, but at the six furlongs Lough Derg and Isabella Pointer were clear or Imperial Jade, with Cavalryman, Bulldozer, Barbara Scott, ShadowSon and Lady Amanda in close order. Then, in a flash, the situation had changed, and horses, drivers and sulkies were piled In eonruslon all over the course. Barbara Scott and Isabella Pointer were clear of the smash, and they were followed by Alcazar and Exporter. Alcazar finished solidly to get the decision by a neck from Isabella Pointer, with Barbara Scott half a length away third, and Exporter fourth. Times, 2.44 2-5, 2.44 3-5, 2.44 4-5, 2.46 1 -5.
