ENEMY’S PROGRESS
RUSH ACROSS CAUSEWAY NO OPPOSITION IN AIR SHIPS HEAVILY BOMBED (United Tress Assn.—Elec. Tel. CoDyftffbt) LONDON, Feb. 15 The Tokio radio claimed that Japanese troops attacking Singapore city made further progress in bitter street lighting after occupying the railway station and capturing the GovernorGeneral’s headquarters and other administrative buildings. It says Japanese armoured units have penetrated the Allied positions one and a-half miles north-west of the city limits and that the British are concentrating their artillery fire from the south of the city on the advancing attackers. The radio further claims that the Japanese occupied the naval base at Seletar at noon on Saturday. It says British gunfire made a breach in the Johore causeway for the second time, but Japanese engineers repaired it and tanks are now crossing the causeway to the island. Other reports from Tokio yesterday admitted that the British were still resisting strongly. The Domei news agency said the enemy continued to counter-attack from a suburb of Singapore. Japanese bombers set on fire two 10,000-ton transports and hit numerous other vessels in Singapore Harbour on Friday night. The Domei agency further states that reports from a Malayan base say Japanese aeroplanes made eight raids on Singapore Island on Friday and were not challenged by enemy aircraft. Military establishments throughout the island were hit, also the docks and artillery emplacements near the Governor’s residence.
