TROTTING ACCIDENT

* EIGHT HORSES INVOLVED INJURIES TO FIVE DRIVERS (By Telegrapn.—Press Astoclatioo) AUCKLAND, Sunday Eight of the 16 horses in the Takapuna Handicap, the last race of the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday, were involved in a smash two and a-half furlongs from the finish. Three drivers were admitted to the Auckland Hospital, and two others treated there for minor injuries and discharged. Those admitted to hospital were:— Mr Arthur Thomas Newdick, aged 51, butter merchant, married, of Epsom; serious injuries to head and fracture of the right arm; condition very serious. Mr Alfred Arthur McGarry, milk vendor, aged 48, married, of Mount Wellington; fractured leg; condition not serious. Vernon Leslie Mackie, aged 20, son of Mr L. Ward, of Mount Albert; concussion; condition not serious. N. L. Berkett and A. W. Broughton suffered abrasions, and were treated at the casualty ward. The accident occurred at a bend, when the field was running in close order. The judicial committee of the club sat immediately after the occurrence. It found that Bulldozer (N. L. Berkett) fell, and that other horses involved collided with Bulldozer or with other pacers who had been brought down in front of them. The other seven horses concerned, with their drivers, were: Moko Direct (A. T. Newdick), Gallant Maid (R. B. Berry), Lady Amanda (A. Ayres), Lough Derg (V. L. Mackie), Warwick (A. W. Broughton), Maratua (G. T. Mitchell), and Handicapper (A. A. McGarry).

IN GRAVE CONDITION (Uy Telegrapn.—Press Association* AUCKLAND, Monday The condition of Mr A. T. Newdick, who was injured in the trotting smash at Alexandra Park on Saturday, is reported to be grave. That of Mr A. A. McGarry and V. L. Mackie is not serious.
