SINGAPORE STILL HEARD
JAPANESE CLAIM CITY’S FALL FURIOUS FIGHTING ON WHOLE FRONT BRITISH BAYONET CHARGE IN BURMA LONDON, February 12 In spite of Japanese claims to have captured the city of Singapore, the radio station there continues to broadcast. Latest advice is that the fighting continues furiously on the whole front stretching north-east to south-west across the island, about one half of which is still in Allied hand?. The Japanese demand for the surrender of the Allied forces has not been answered. The Colonial Secretary, Lord Moyne, broadcast from London an encouragement to Singapore to hold on. The Japanese are using tanks and their land forces are strongly supported by bombers and divebombers. In the Philippines the lull continues. The Japanese are apparently reorganising their forces and awaiting reinforcements. In the forefront of the news from Burma is the story of a British regiment which in the Salween River area attacked a Japanese force with the bayonet. The Japanese abandoned their arms and fled.
