BLAZING TENT

MAORI CHILD’S FATE MOTHER SHOWS HEROISM BOY DIES IN HOSPITAL .(Special to Times) TE AROHA, Thursday A three-years-old Maori boy received fatal injuries when the tent in which he was sleeping caught fire. The boy, who was the son of Wiahina Herewinl, a labourer employed by Mr J. Shallue, of Mangaiti, was asleep on a ned in the tent when a child playing outside noticed the fire and gave the alarm. The mother rushed from the adjacent whare and regardless of her own safety picked the child up from the blazing mass and carried him to the whare. The child was found to be semi-conscious and suffering from severe neck and head injuries, and he died later at night in the Thames Hospital. Mrs Herewini received severe bums on the arms and was given medical attention. It is thought that the fire was caused through one of the children playing with wax matches left in the tent.
