LONDON, Dec. 9
A number of new enemy aliens have been interned following the declaration of war on Japan, Finland, Hungary and Rumania. The total number of male enemy aliens is stated to be: —Finns 250. Hungarians 1400, Rumanians 1300, Japanese 600. The number of women is approximately the same, except Hungarians about 2000 and Japanese and Finns 100. These figures do not include seamen, of whom about eight Japanese are employed in coastal shipping. About 400 Finns are employed in ocean-going ships. It is not considered necessary to adopt a policy of general internment, as was done in the case of Germans and Italians, but a certain number have been placed in custody. Those interned are to be transferred to a camp in the Isle of Man. In the case of Japanese it is hoped to be possible to make mutual arrangements for the evacuation of Japanese nationals in Britain and British nationals in Japan.
It is the intention of the Government to treat the Japanese as considerately as possible consistent with the needs of security and it is hoped that they will treat British nationals in the same manner.
