HAMILTON CRICKET

OLD BOYS BEAT CLAUDELANDS HAMILTON AND EAST DRAW Postponed from the previous week on account of rain, the final series of matches In the first round of the Hamilton senior A cricket competition were played at Seddon Park on Satuiday as one-day , games. Ideal weather conditions prevailed and the grounds were in good order. The divided time limit did not produce the fast-scoring cricket that was antici- , pated, and apart from aggressive knocks 1 by Avery and W. Higginson, who both I reached the half-century mark, the j majority of the batsmen played with even j more than usual caution. The highlight of Hamilton's innings ' against Hamilton East was - E. Avery’s not j out score of 66, which included four j boundaries and a powerful six, bringing j the tally from four wickets for only 27 ! runs to 157 when the last w’icket fell. The next highest scorer, Dutton, also had a six in his total of 23 runs. Weakened by the absence of both Bright and Cassidy. East did not attempt a spectacular display, and fought an uphill struggle until seven wickets were down for 50. Then Ingle and Miskell defied all Hamilton’s efforts to separate them for over an hour and the score was carried on tc 96, when the fall of two wickets in quick succession made defeat seem possible. The last pair, however. survived two more overs and with 101 runs on the board for the loss of nine wickets a drawn game resulted. In the other senior A match there was little excitement at any stage, the only batsman in Claudeland's total of 76 to get the measure of the bowling being Hemi! with 31 runs. After an unenterprising start when it seemed possible that Old Boys might have some difficulty in reaching Claudelands’ meagre total. Higginson and Yates hit out. and 140 runs were on the board before the last wicket fell. Details:— HAMILTON v. HAMILTON EAST HAMILTON.—First Innings K. Sandford. c Mitchell, b Powell .. 17 T.
