BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS

rUKETAIIA RESIDENT Recently a happy gathering was held at the residence of Mr Edwin Thomas to celebrate his 70th birthday and also that of his sister, Mrs Archer, of Carterton. The latter with her sister, Mrs Fellingham, of Pio Pio, were ably assisted by Mrs R. G. Young, of Gordonton. The celebratin, which at the same time was a family reunion, was attended by a few friends of many years’ standing. Mr Thomas has been in the Puketaha district and his present home for 35 years, and in that period has seen many changes and much progress.

In proposing the health of the guests-of-honour, Mr V. Harris, of Hamilton, paid tribute to Mr Thomas as a pioneer and to his sterling qualities, to which many in the district could testify. When responding Mr Thomas gave an interesting resume of his earlier years, and recounted some amusing incidents. A feature of the festivities was the cutting of a beautiful cake made by Mrs C. E. Thomas, and iced and decorated with 70 candles by Mrs R. G. Young. Those present were: Mesdames Archer, Fellingham, C. E. Thomas, R- G. Young, V. Harris, Denby, Sainsbury, Bramley; Misses Glass, Astrid Harris, Joyce Thomas, Marion and Edna Young.
