RATANA PA CONTROL

(By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Friday

It was a matter of necessity that the people of Ratana should have the right to govern themselves and improve conditions in their pa, said the Hon. Rangi Mawhete, the only Maori member of the Legislative Council, when the Native Purposes Bill was being passed this afternoon. He said the bill had been agreed to by the whole of the Ratana Movement in the pa. About 300 Maoris were living there and it was high time the place was cleaned up. The Appropriation Bill and the Local Leislation Bill were also passed by the Council.
