CHEESE CHANGE-OVER
SHORTAGE OF MILK CANS The shortage of milk cans in the Waikato still constitutes a serious problem to the dairy industry in the change-over to cheese production. Farmers who are supplying factories twice daily have been asked to assist by making any spare cans available to those supplying only once a day. Difficulties are also being experienced in obtaining sufficient labour for the factories, but the work is not being held up on this account and the factories are being able to handle all the supply coming forward. The lateness of the season, however, is helping in this respect. Several factories are working double shifts, but the supply has not yet warranted this practice being carried out in all factories. The warmer weather this week is expected to make a great difference to pasture growth, but at present comparatively little green feed is available. Notwithstanding, dairy herds are in good condition and mortality has not been heavy. The late spring will probably result in lower dairy output this season, but a more favourable summer and autumn may make final figures compare well with last season’s high production levels.
