ANZAC SOLDIERS

IN HIDING IN GREECE HELPED BY VILLAGERS THREATS BY GERMANS (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) (Received Sept. 15, 12.10 p.m.) LONDON, Sept. 14 Many British and Anzac soldiers are still at large in Greece. Most of them are hiding in the mountains of Northern Greece. A neutral traveller who has just left Greece says this in a letter to London friends. He adds that Greek villagers feed the troops, often going without food themselves to give it to soldiers. Villagers warn the troops when the Nazis are coming. The Germans threatened the death penalty for anyone sheltering Britishers. The Greeks’ dairy bread ration has been cut to about one-sixth of normal needs, with the result that many faint at their work. BRITISH PENETRATION FIGHTING NEAR TOBRUK (Omcial Wireless) (Received September 15, 11.30 a.m.) RUGBY, Sept. 14 A communique issued from the British Headquarters at Cairo states: In the Tobruk area four fighting patrols made deep penetrations into an enemy position at a number of points, without making contact. As a result of our activities the enemy shelling was particularly heavy against the eastern sector of the Tobruk defences. Enemy bombing attacks during the night were continuous, but resulted in no casualties and no important damage to material. In the frontier area enemy patrols, moving in a somewhat wider than usual area, are being successfully engaged. GERMAN AIR ATTACKS NEW TYPE OF PLANE (Official Wireless) (Received September 15, 11.30 a.m.) RUGBY, Sept. 14 The Germans are using the latest types of planes in the great air battles over Leningrad, says the Exchange’s Moscow correspondent. One of these types of Messerschmitt 115 was brought down. It is a single-seater fighter of 1600 horse-power. It is stated it has a speed of 400 miles an hour. The wing-span is 31 feet.
