NEARING LENINGRAD
CLAIMS BY GERMANY (omclal Wlreleaa) (Received Sept. 4, 11 a.m.) RUGBY. Sept. 3 Although Russian and German communiques are extremely reticent regarding details of the fignting, unofficial reports all emphasise the pressure of the German forces are increasing against Leningrad. Claims are made by German war correspondents that the forces are within fifteen miles of the second city of Russia, but informed opinion here says that there is no confirmation of any large change in the line either in the Leningrad or Gomel and Kiev sectors. The fall of Tallinn, which is reported in a Russian midnight communique, is part of an independent operation and could have no immediate effect on the. Leningrad offensive. The territory around Leningrad is stated to be of a marshy character, unsuited for speedy advance by the German mechanised units. A Russian mid-day communique says: During last night troops continued fighting on tile entire front and planes continued to deal heavy blows on enemy motorised and mechanised units, artillery and infantry and on enemy planes on aerodromes.
