NO STOCKINGS

ENGLISH PRINCESSES The Queen has decided that her two daughters, Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret Rose, shall go without stockings in order to keep within their ration of sixty-six coupons for all clothes. She herself, from being used to a very large selection of outfits, largely because society precedent expected it of her, is now wearing her dresses and hats over and over again. As for catering, the Queen told Food Minister Lord Woolton recently, “We find it such a help to have a good joint once a week at the Palace.” In other words, the Queen, like the great majority of British housewives, has discovered that it is most economical and satisfactory to spend the greater part of the week’s meat ration on a good joint, for then there will be left-overs for another day or two.
