POTATO IMPORTS

SUPPLIES FROM AUSTRALIA' HIGH SOUTH ISLAND PRICES (By Telegraph.—press Association) WELLINGTON, Friday Supplies of Australian potatoes are to be imported into New Zealand, according to an announcement by the Minister of Marketing, the Hon. J. G. Barclay, who stated today that shipments would arrive at both Auckland and Wellington. This importation, said the Minister, had been made owing to the high prices now ruling in the South Island and doubt as to whether Dominion supplies would be sufficient to meet requirements until the new crop was available. The shipments from Australia are mainly to be used to meet army and Government requirements, and the Minister added that it was felt that with the shipments mentioned there would probably be sufficient potatoes in the South Island to meet requirements until the new crop in October. Further, importations would be regulated accordingly.
