“THE SACRIFICE”
HAMILTON WRITER’S PLAY PRESENTED AT ST. GEORGE'S “The Sacrifice,” a play written by Mr A. S. Cook, of Hamilton, was staged in St. George’s Hall, Frarkton, last night. The highly dramatic story is that of Jephthah’s daughter and the vow of her father, leader of the Israelites in a battle with the Ammonites, to sacrifice to the Lord the first thing that came from his house to meet him on his victorious return from battle. To his horror, Jephthah is greeted by his daughter, and considers breaking his vow, but she insists that it be fulfilled and the sacrifice is made, to the glory of God. Excellent work was done by the players—Misses R. Seddon. M. Cook, R. Carbon, D. Dingle, D. Robertson, B. Hill, E. Gilbert, Mrs S. A. Cook, Mrs E, Etheridge, Mrs C. Wilson, Messrs Charles Harrison. E. Etheridge, R. Blackmore, M. James, G. R. Bowden and S. A. Cook, Rev. M. Richards. Prior to the presentation of the play an enjoyable concert programme was given as fallows: Pianoforte solo, Mrs Sargent; songs, “Arise, O Sun,” and “The Village Blacksmith,” Mr H. Arthur; songs, “1 Heard a Forest Praying” and “Four Ducks in a Pond,” Mrs Colin Wilson; humour, “The Great Artist” and “Oh, ’er,” Miss Shirley Burton; song, “Waiata Poi,” Mrs Sargent; songs, “Because” and “Goin' Home,” Mr Colin Roskruge; songs, “Bird Songs at Eventide” and “Keep on Hopin’,” Miss Primmer.
