THE VICTORY SIGN
APPEARANCE IN HAMILTON CAMPAIGN AGAINST TYRANNY “ V for victory ” is a catch-phrase which is sweeping the world like wildfire among freedom - loving peoples and particularly among those who have suffered directly under the heel of Nazi oppression. Since July 20, when Europe commenced an amazing campaign against tyranny by marking V on buildings, roads, trees and other available places, the idea has swept far beyond the actual theatre of war and within the space of only two or three days an active interest in the campaign has become evident in New Zealand. The first V sign on a public building in Hamilton made its appearance yesterday when a signwriter became busy on a shop window in Victoria Street. In Auckland, Wellington and other large centres the idea has already caught the minds of the public and the victory sign is now prominently displayed. In Hamilton and other districts it is expected that before long this passive campaign which represents opposition tq Nazi tyranny will gather full weight and that the phrase “V for victory” will be as common as “Heil Hitler” is in Germany. Apart from the signs on buildings the “V for victory” campaign has been enthusiastically taken up by individuals. many of whom are wearing brooches and pins adorned with a V. During the last two days a steady demand for victory brooches has been met by shops in Hamilton and in at least one instance the supply was completely exhausted by this morning. Sonic shops in Hamilton are also erecting special window displays with V the motif of the designs.
