PRESSURE ON VICHY

COMPULSION BY GERMANY (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) NEW YORK, June 6 “Germany is virtually compelling France to fight Britain if she wishes to preserve her future as an imperial power,” says Edgar Ansell Mowrer. the New York Post’s special correspondent, in a message from Washington. Quoting authoritative circles in the capital, Mowrer says the German ultimatum to the Vichy Government declared:— “Defend your Empire! “Retake those portions you have lost! “Supply yourself freely from your Empire! “Germany thus will permit France to preserve her empire intact.” “France is required to, as soon as possible, take back French Equatorial Africa, which means fighting the Free French and British,” says Mr Mowrer. “The phrase, ‘Supply yourself freely from your empire!’ means France must defy British sea power and bring raw materials from her colonies, not only for France, but for Germany.”
