APPEALS FOR MINERS COAL SHORTAGE ACUTE Evidence concerning the acute shortage of coal and the lack of adequate staffs of miners at most of the | collieries on the Huntly coalfields was J given before the No. 2 Armed Forces ■ Appeal Board at Huntly and Ng*t- • ruawahia yesterday, when appeals | against service with the overseas j forces by miners were heard. One | mine manager stated that owing to ; the recent number of holidays there ! was still a shortage of coal and his ■ company had been unable to supply its quota to the New Zealand railways for six weeks. Another manager stated that all the collieries were short staffed and at his mine he could find work for 50 miners immediately. The appeals in all the cases for the miners, which were on the grounds of public interest, were adjourned • sine die, with the proviso that the reI servists are to join the Home Guard. Miners From Huntly J The miners concerned at the Huntly ! sitting were: Michael O’Connor, Wilfred Ernest Webber, Gordon Haining ; Smith, Alexander Wilson MCTigue, Stanley Williams, David Muir, R. E. j Turtington, John William Shaw Nuttall, Alan Hedley, Eric Pascoe Thom- ! son, Thomas Smith, Leonard Joseph ; Grant, William Carrick Inglis. Robert ! Leslie Armstrong, John Lewars Alj lan, Henry Briggs, Hugh Gillies. Ray- ' mond James Roller, Gordon Clifford ; Brown, Charles Edward Wheelahan. ! The miners granted sine die adjournment at the Ngaruawahia sitting were:—Leonard Turnbull Crackett, James Hawthorn Connor, Reginald Barton Reid, Frank Hale, Walter Mervin Cuthbert, Thomas Davie For- ; rest, Thomas Crawford, William John j Drain, William Forrest, Geoffrey Ron- : aid McDonald, John Brown, Lloyd i George Brown, James Campbell For- ; rest, Bert Kerry. Other Appeals Heard ! There were also other appeals at both sittings. At Huntly John Preest appealed for Douglas Joseph Preest, a farmer, of Te Rahu on the grounds of public interest and undue hardship, the appeal being adjourned sine die providing the reservist joins the Home Guard. The Director of National Service appealed for Stanley Herbert Arthur Pike, a farmer, the appeal being adjourned sine die, but Pike to undergo his Territorial training. G. Knight appealed for George Knight, a farmer, on the grounds of public interest and undue hardship, the appeal being adjourned until the f first sitting of the board in August. Two Appeals Dismissed At the Ngaruawahia sitting Thomas ! McGuire appealed for Francis Gilbert McGuire, a farmer, of Te Akau, on the grounds of public interest and undue hardship, the appeal being adjourned sine die but the reservist to undertake Territorial training. Based on similar grounds Raymond i Philburn was granted a sine die ad- I journment but he has to do Territor- ; ial training. Appeals for William John Albert Tapp, of Ruakiwi, and William Man- ; deno Saunders were adjourned, reservists to join the Home Guard. The appeal of Nesbit John Cavanagn was dismissed, and one lor John Langdon, by Mrs F. A. Langdon, was dismissed, appellant not lo be called up before November.
