SONG FOR THE NATION

PROPOSAL IN AMERICA UNITED SPIRIT OF MUSIC When the King and Queen of England visited Washington in 1939, our bands played “ God Save the King,” says a writer in the Christian Science Monitor. I was impressed by the “ united ” spirit of this music, for to many it meant our own beautiful “ America.” Thinking of its value as a song for all peoples I wrote these two verses:— International Hymn Our Father-Mother God, Ruler of all the world At Thy command. May truth and love be found As light on hallowed ground, That freedom may abound In every land. To Thee our prayers arise For men of kingly guise Or lowly birth. Send forth Thy radiant good, In peace and brotherhood, Till Thou art understood O’er all the earth.
