HAMILTON HARRIERS

OPENING RUN HELD MANY NEW JUNIORS (By “Plodder.”) The Hamilton Harrier Club held its initial run Tor the 194 1 season on Saturday last from Bridge Street. The 19 runners included a number of juniors and it wa* pleasing to see quite a few new Faces. From Bridge street the 3} mile trail led down through the motor camp and around the river bank to the pumping station. This section contained a great deal of gorse and blackberry and was probably the worst part for the newcomers to the game. The trail then led on to skirt the hospital, back up to the lake gates, round the lake drive to the first water-tower and down Clarence Street to the finish in Bridge Street. it was a pleasure to see our president. Mr. Manderson. out for a run and under his whistle the boys had to keep the pack together until he released them at the top or Clarence Street. From here M. Cranston. N. Saunders and C. Martin went ahead to finish in that order on the heels of the trail-layers. Several of tlie new mmi ran well, but il l* difficult at this stage to toil just how they will shape. The run next week will be from the residence of Mr and Mrs Roberts, Te Aroha street. C.Y.M. HARRIERS (By Grampus) A preliminary run prior ta the official opening or the season was Held last sat urday over a four mile course. The run being the first of the season, allowed some of tlie best runners in good form, but Uis cretion must be exercised in these early runs, so that those who ar*- not so fit. may nut over exert themselves. Among the senior members present were E. Jones, N. Sundervick and J. McLuughlan, who were, last year, some of our representatives in the Centennial road race from Christchurch to Akaroa; a race that will not be readily forgotten by those who participated in it. B. Pearson and W. Kemp finished very strongly. The lat ter last year, finished second in the club at the South Auckland Championships held at Te Kuiti. This year it is hoped that lie will retain the chief honour which is held by a member of this club for that Several or our executive members arton active service, but ihe manner in which the challenge tu carry on has been taken up by those remaining leaves little doubt as to the success u>r the coming season. Many of tbe runners Horn last year are turning out again, white the increase in membership will probably surprise many. The system of grading runners into packs of various ability, has proved very satisfactory, giving new members a better change to develop stamina.
