AUSTRALIAN PREMIER

ADDRESS IN NEW YORK MAIN ISSUE OF WAR (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) LONDON, May 7 A statement that the main issue of the war would be fought in the air and on the sea in the next 12 months was made by the Prime Minister of Australia, Mr R. G. Menzies, in New York last night. Mr Menzies said the world was waiting to see how quickly the United States could reach its top-Jine industrial capacity. The war was not about the politics of Europe, but of the human race. “ The English people, and it is also my personal opinion, believe that this is your war as much as it is ours.” he added. Mr Menzies told the press: “I am convinced that Britain cannot lose the war, though the speed of victory depends on the United States. “As Australian Prime Minister I want to say quite frankly to the United States, ‘lt is up to you.’ “You are not being asked to make a donation to a deserving charity. You are being asked to defend your own way of life. But you can do more than produce materials of war. You can see that they arrive where they will do most good.” DEFENCE OF PHILIPPINES BIG APPROPRIATION ASKED AMERICA AND WAR (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) MANILA, May 6 Declaring that the trend of events “seems to point strongly to the United States entry into the war,” Don Quezon, the President, asked the Assembly to appropriate 10,000,000 j pesos to provide civilian defences and also to extend the emergency powers.
