MILK SUPPLY
ZONING SYSTEM REVIEWED CHANGE RECOMMENDED The special committee on milk supply in Hamilton, in a report to the Hamilton Borough Council last night, pointed out that it was of the opinion that during the war period the saving in mileage and petrol effected by the zoning system was worth while, but that in view of the widespread dissatisfaction in the zoned areas the Hamilton Milk Vendors’ Association be asked to amend their conditions of zoning to permit a choice of Jersey or other milk, and that failing compliance with this request representations be made to the Minister. Mr C. Croall proposed an amendment, deleting all words after “while,” and substituting therefor: “and recommend continuation of the system with the proviso that a central depot be established for mixing and cleaning of milk, so as to ensure that all consumers get the same quality of milk.” Mr C. Lafferty, seconding the amendment, commended the Wellington City Council’s system. Mr J. R. Fow said the committee’s recommendation followed the Invercargill system, and added that it was strongly favoured by the Plunket Society. Mr W. R. Shattock said that in Invercargill zone areas were larger, with three vendors in each. He favoured that practice. The recommendation was adopted.
