Municipal Polling Booths A request for polling booths for the coming . municipal elections at Massey Street, Maeroa, the hospital and at the end of Thames Street was made to the Hamilton Borough Council last night in a letter from the Hamilton Labour Representation Committee. After hearing the explanation of the town clerk, Mr W. L. Waddel (who is also the returning officer) that the expenses, £4O to £SO, were not justified, the council decided not to support the request. During the discussion it was stated that the cost of the municipal elections in Hamilton would be about £SOO.

Compliments Fly When proposing a vote of thanks to the Minister of Marketing, Hon. J. G. Barclay, at the dairy conference in Hamilton yesterday, one of the delegates caused a shout of laughter by saying he liked Mr Barclay better than he liked Mr Walter Nash, chiefly because Mr Barclay, as a farmer himself, could see the farmers’ point of view. Mr Barclay, acknowledging the tribute, told the meeting that he had been given a great deal of help in a very difficult task by both the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser, and the Minister of Finance, the Hon. W. Nash. Wanted to be Honest There was a general laugh at the South Auckland Dairy Association Conference in Hamilton yesterday when Mr A. J. Sinclair (Te Awamutu) interrupted the Minister of Marketing, the Hon. J. G. Barclay, with the jocular "remark, “Don’t get annoyed.” The Minister had been telling the conference that he objected to being questioned with the object of trapping him into admissions that would reflect on Government policy. He was quite willing to answer reasonable questions. It was at this stage that Mr Sinclair interjected, and the Minister laughingly denied that he was annoyed. He merely wanted to be honest, and felt that the trend of the questioning suggested a hostile attitude. Electric Speedway An application for permission to conduct an electric speedway at the corner of Garden Place and Alexandra Street came before the Hamilton Borough Council last night. As no objection was forthcoming from the police it was decided on the motion of the Mayor, Mr H. D. Caro, to grant a license to the applicant, subject to the plant and equipment being satisfactory to the borough inspectors. A considerable amount of discussion took place on the question of granting licenses to showmen on private property, speakers contending that where showmen were permitted to operate in direct opposition to the Waikato Winter Show it was injurious to the town and district. Messrs H. D. Caro, C. Croall, F. C. House, R. McCaw, H. M. Hammond, C. Lafferty and D. I. Gate voted for the motion granting the license and Messrs W. M. Cann, F. Findlay, J. R. Fow, T. G. Reynolds and W. W. Dillicar against it. Mr W. R. Shattock did not vote.
