SALE OF BULLS

TIME LIMITS DECIDED WAIKATO BREEDERS’ FIXTURE The question of the introduction of time limits for the selling of bulls at the annual pedigree bull sale was discussed at a general meeting of the Waikato Combined Breeders’ and Auctioneers’ Association in Hamilton today, Mr T. J. A. Whewell presiding. It was stated by Mr W. T. Luxton that the sales in Taranaki were operated with the auctioneers adhering to times for each manner each vendor was afforded the same selling time. Mr W. J. Livingstone said that a discussion on the same subject took place about eight years ago, but it was decided that the .timing system should not be encouraged. as it tended to lower the sale to an ordinary grade. He claimed that the difficulty had been overcome by the co-operation of the auctioneers and those engaged in the drafting of the animals. In reply -to this statement, Mr F. C. Veale was of the opinion that this practice was wrong, as many vendors who were having their bulls sold towards the end of the sale objected to the slightly less time allotted them. Mr Livingstone remarked that in no case was any penning sold under a minute and a half. However, coni tinued Mr Livingstone, if it were tne ' desire of the committee that a timej keeper be employed, he felt sure ! that the auctioneers would be agree- ' able. j On the recommendation of Mr W. | Wallace it was decided to follow the j example of the Taranaki sales and ; appoint a timekeeper. It was decided 1 to let the auctioneers arrange the time j limits and to further the arrangeI ments at the next meeting, when the | total number of entries would be | known. Inspecting of Bulls A discussion took place on the inspecting of bulls on type and the representatives of the various breeds were oi the opinion that this move j would be welcomed by the breeders. It was agreed that the various breeds should hold a meeting and the question will be discussed at the next . meeting. ; The closing date for entries for the annual sale was fixed for July 14. Present at the meeting were Messrs : T. J. A. Whewell (chairman), A. W. ! Green (secretary), P. Bremer. W. i Wallace, W. T. Luxton. F. S. Veale, l W. A. Southei, G. D. Hal], K. WychI erly (G. W. Vercoe and Co., Ltd.), ! W. J. Livinstone (Farmers’ Co-oper- ' ative Auctioneering Co., Ltd.), W. B. f Fearon (New Zealand Loan and Mereantilee Agency Co., Ltd), and J. A. D. Hopkirk (Dalgety and Co., Ltd.).
