MINERS STOP WORK
QUARREL AT MANGAPEHI BOARDING-HOUSE DISPUTE (Special to Time*) TE KUITI, Wednesday Arising out of occurrences at a Mangapehi boarding establishment recently three men are to be charged before the next sitting of the Magistrate’s Court with mischief, by chopping down ornamental trees in the garden of the establishment. Yesterday morning the men interviewed by the police were evicted by the proprietor. Some of these were employed at the Mangapehi State coal mine and were lodging at the mill boarding house. On the men’s arrival at the mine to report for work yesterday morning, a stop-work meeting was announced, and this resulted in the whole of the miners going out on strike. 50 men hung about Mangapehi township all day. In the afternoon the mill hall was hired for a meeting, which resulted in a deputation being elected to endeavour to induce the boarding house proprietor to reconsider the position.
It is understood accommodation was arranged with the proprietor for a further 14 days to enable the men implicated to procure accommodation elsewhere. The men resumed work this morning at the coal mine.
