TROTTING TOPICS

NOTES AND COMMENTS Providing the weather holds the racing surface at Claudelands on Saturday will be in splendid order ror the Waikato Trotting Club’s approaching meeting. Working Freely Shirvvin, the maiden pacer by Silk Thread from Cleo, in W. E. Cockbili’s stable, has been working along freely on J the tracks at Claudelands and yesterday pleased by his smooth action. Strong Combination With Young Parry, Crucible and Grand Dame, the leading Te Rapa trainer, M. Stewart, commands a strong combination in the Waikato Handicap and present indications are that the bracket will be in firm request with the public. Our Peggy Our Peggy worked pleasingly at headquarters yesterday and appears to have taken no harm from Epsom exertions where her running in the Fergusson Handicap indicated that she is on the upgrade again. Change of Stables. Blush Worthy, who was formerly trained by L. N. Vernall, for Mr. G. Cross, has been taken over by L. Geach, and will have her first start under her new ownership in the Eureka Handicap on Saturday. Siie has shown promise on occasions. Uenuku’s Credentials At his best Uenukti is a sprinter above the average and he demonstrated by his second to Kcnworthv at Epsom in February and his second to Molly Direct at Addington last month that he is returning to Ills best again. A brilliant beginner, he should make a bold showing oIT 21 yards. Stargum I The good third of Stargum to the dea<lheaters, Club King and Keie Kura, at Epsom last month suggests a good chance for him in the big race here on Saturday. He. has been racing consistently at all distances and, it, will be recalled, ran a close second to Ropata in the two-mile Cambridge Summer Handicap. Worked Weil Among those, to work well yesterday ar, Claudelands was Double Peter, who by coining home the final half-mile or his work in 1.6 J, indicated that he is coming right again. On Saturday he is entered for the Kalpaki Handicap, two miles, and may not be without prospects, although he would need to improve on his Epsom running of last month. Katoomba When Katoomba ran second at Epsom last month he was unlucky in meeting such a fit horse as Moko Direct on the day. Moko Direct actually ran 2.4 8 oIT 3.5 mark, so that Katoomba, off 12 yards, did reasonably well, under the circumstances, to get within five lengths of him. Katoomba is an acceptor for the first division of the Eureka Handicap and will have an opportunity to make amends. Modern Parrish Modern Parrish drew attention to his prospects at a totaJisator fixture when he ran secqjid to Now Then at the picnic fixture at Ngaruawahia on April 5 and ir he has improved at all in the interim he would not be without prospects in the first division or the Eureka Handicap. He is trained at Cambridge by G. T. Mitchell. Caßtella Del Oro Castella Del Oro shaped well over a mile and a quarter at Claudelands and indications are he will strip in good order for his engagement in the first division of the Eureka Handicap this week. It will bo recalled that he finished third to NowThen and Rockfel at Epsom last month and that outing has apparently proved beneficial. Noble Prince Noble Prince was responsible for an impressive trial at Claudelands yesterday and if he could reproduce it on Saturday he would be difficult to dispose of in the sprint event, the Matangi Handicap. However, while he has gone some good races and won the Bledisloe Handicap in Epsom record time for the mile and a half at the Summer meeting, he is not too reliable and it is this aspect that will cost him support on Saturday. Gallant Pointer The Gallant Knight gelding in R. Dunn’s stable, Gallant Pointer, pleased by the manner in which he was finishing on to be on terms with Katene at the completion or a mile and a hal'f at Claudelands yesterday. While the time for the full distance was not outstanding Gallant Knight did his work well and is not without prospects of creating a surprise in the Eureka Ilandi--011 Saturday here. Likely Maiden Among the likely novices noted at the recent Auckland meeting was G. T. Mitchell’s County Jewel, who, after filling the role or runner-up to Now Then at the Ngaruawahia Trotting Club’s fixture recently, ran an encouraging third to Moko Direct and Katoomba in the second division of the Devonport Handicap. The Tour-year-old Jewel Pointer gelding should have .derived benefit from those engagements and may be seen to better advantage the next time he is produced.
