MINISTER QUOTED

RADIO NEWS FROM BERLIN NEW ZEALAND PRODUCTION The Hon. J. G. Barclay, Minister of Agriculture, mentioned in an interview today that although he had j not long held a Ministerial portfolio i he had actually been quoted in a j radio broadcast from Berlin. The i Minister explained that ; bearing on some aspects of New Zea- | land’s war effort were despatched abroad, and, if possible, so tw r isted as to provide propaganda for the Empire’s enemies. On a Monday night at Christchurch he had quoted a few figures relating to the farming industry. “Imagine my surprise,” said Mr Barclay, “to learn that on the following Thursday morning the Berlin radio, in its broadcast, was quoting my figures, with a lot of misinformation designed to indicate that there was a critical shipping dislocation and consequent food shortage situation in Great Britain. Incidentally, I was referred to as the ‘Minister of Economic Services in New Zealand.' ” The Minister added that he quoted this to show that it could be dangerous to publish figures relating to New Zealand’s production and export.
