REMARKABLE SEQUENCE
THE CALDER FAMILY 8 GENERATIONS OF CLERICS With the ordination to-morrow, at Te Awamutu, of Mr Matthew Lewis Calder into the Church of England ministry a remarkable family record is extended, for Mr Calder is a direct descendant of a line of seven ministers of the Church, all bearing the family name. Mr Matthew Calder who is the younger son of Rev. Jasper Calder, M.B.E. of Auckland, will be made a deacon, the ordination being performed by the Rt. Rev. C. A. Cherrington, Bishop of Waikato in the historic church of St. John’s, Te Awamutu, where the candidate has been assisting the vicar, Rev. Martin Sullivan, for the past two years. He is the younger brother of Sergeant Denver Calder, now serving in Egypt with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. He is a former student of Moore College, Sydney, where he obtained the diploma of licentiate in theology. Has Heard Three Generations The ordination sermon will be preached by the Rev. Jasper Calder, and a noteworthy member of the congregation on the occasion is to be Mr A. Bellhouse, of Onehunga, who has heard sermons by three generations of the Calder family, including Mr Matthew Calder’s great-grandfather, Rev. Frederick Calder, when the latter was rector of Chesterfield, Derbyshire. The line of Calder was extended to New Zealand in 1875 by the arrival of the late Ven. William Calder, for 35 years vicar of All Saints’, Ponsonby, and for a long Deriod Archdeacon of Auckland.
