NATIONAL COUNCIL OF WOMEN RESOLUTION ON FLOGGING The Hamilton branch of the National Council of Women, after a summer recess, held its first monthly meeting of the year 1941 at the Lyceum Club, recently. The president. Mrs J. D. M. Foreman, M.A. (Cantab.), was in the chair and there was an excellent attendance of members. A good deal of accumulated correspondence was dealt with including an inspiring letter to branches from the recently appointed Dominion president, Mrs D. Mclntosh, J.P. Thanks were received from Lady Galway for flowers and messages oi loyalty to Their Majesties presented to her on her departure from New Zealand, by the National Council oi Women. There was discussion on remits to be sent to the forthcoming conference to be held in Wanganui in September, both on domestic matters and on the following resolution which was passed by a majority vote: ‘ That this meeting requests the Government to give effect to its expressed policy of abolishing corporal punishment in prisons; it points out that the departmental committee in England, liter considering a large mass of evilence came to the conclusion that corporal punishment was not a deterrent and recommended its abolition. Li requests the Government to give effect to its policy by giving instructions that no flogging shall in future dc given.” Reports on Subjects Studied Reports, which will appear in the Women’s World at a later date, were 'ead on subjects studied by the Dranch during the year on:—(1) Cost Df living and how it affects the family budget. Mrs Mclntosh gave an interim rejort of the Obstetric Conference in Wellington which she had attended md a vote of thanks was accorded to ier for her extremely interesting account of the conference. The president gave notice of the /isit to Hamilton of Miss Moncrieff, a member of the International YW.C.A. at the end of the month and nformed members of the public reception to be given in her honour by he Y.W.C.A. on Monday evening, March 31. The executive also hopes o arrange a morning tea for Miss Moncrieff on Wednesday, April 2, at L 0.45 at the Lyceum Club, so that as many members as possible will have :he opportunity of meeting and hearng this outstanding woman. It is miderstood she will speak on China, where she has lived for a long time.
