WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
TE KAWA The annual general meeting of the Te Kawa Women’s Institute was held in the Public Hall recently, when Mrs J. Henderson presided over a representative gathering. The following officers were elected: President, Miss E. Alderson; secretary, Mrs J. B. McLean; treasurer, Mrs A. Stewart; committee, Mesdames R. Chestnut, R. Burton, I. Gudsell and J. Henderson. A great deal of business was handled, after which the retiring secretary, Miss Alderson, was presented with a small gift in recognition of her services as secretary. Miss Alderson, on behalf of the members, thanked Mrs Henderson, the retiring president, for the great help she had been to the institute. She presented her with a bouquet. A bring-and-buy stall did very good business. The roll call, “ A riddle,” caused a good deal of merriment. Several letters, received from sol- | diers overseas, thanking the institute for parcels they had received, were read. It was decided at future meetings that proceedings would be opened with a short prayer. The results of the competitions were as follows:—Collection of dahlias, Mrs K. Thorsen, Junr., 1, Miss E. Alderson 2, Mrs R. Chestnut 3; folded paper serviettes, Mrs R. Chestnut 1, Miss E. Alderson 2. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames R. Burton and R. Mexted.
WHITIORA The Whitiora Women's Institute recently held its monthly meeting in the Y.M.C.A., when Mrs D. 1. Gate was in the chair. There was a good number of members and friends present. Mrs Gate wished the institute a prosperous new year. A pleasant afternoon was spent. The competition for the best bloom was won by Mrs A. Smith and Mrs Phillis was awarded the trophy for the best jar of jam. Mrs Lerkie donated a beautiful basket of fruit, the proceeds of which was given to the soldiers’ parcels fund. Mrs Lawson was the lucky winner. Mrs Lerkie was thanked for her kind effort. The hostesses served afternoon tea, bringing the meeting to a close.
NAWTON-ROTOKALRI The annual meeting of the NawtonRotokauri Women’s Institute took place recently in Nawton Hall. The following committee was elected for the bnsuing year: Mesdames McKenzie, Elvey, Sanders, Frost, Stevenson, White (sen.), White * (jun.), Cook and Pope; also Misses Miller and Tinsley. Mrs Frost was elected president and Mrs Stevenson vice-pre-sident. Mrs Kay was put in charge of the monthly competitions and Mrs Cramp in charge oi the soldiers’ box. Mesdames White and Cook were appointed kitchen manageress and press correspondent respectively. Mrs Elvey was appointed agent for “Home and Country,” and Mr H. Douglas auditor. The points prize for the past year’s competitions was won by Mrs Terry, and Mesdames Elvey and Sanders tied for second place. Arrangements were completed for a bus trip to Te Aroha to be taken by members and friends. A presentation of a clock was made to Mrs Vane the retiring president, | as a mark of the esteem in which she 1 has always been held by her fellow- ■ members. j A hearty vote of thanks to the re--1 tiring committee and officers was pro-
posed by Mrs Elvey and carried with acclamation. The new committee meets on Wednesday, March 12. EUREKA The monthly meeting of the Eureka Women’s Institute was held in the hall recently when Mrs Harris presided over a fair attendance. Mrs C. P. Harington was proposed as a member of the Waikato executive. A donation was forwarded to the patriotic society in Hamilton for soldiers’ parcels. Each month a parcel is sent to a local soldier serving overseas. Nominations were called for all offices for the enusing year. Competitions for the day resulted as follows:—Best dahlia bloom, Mrs Young 1, Mrs K. Inglis 2. The hall competition was won by Miss H. Saleman. ' Afternoon tea served by the hostI esses, Mrs Johns and Miss Hunter, closed a very enjoyable afternoon.
