BRITISH REPLY
CHURCHILL'S ASSURANCE FAR EAST CONDITIONS AVOIDANCE OF WAR (United Press Assi.. —Elec. Tel. Copyright) LONDON, Feb. 24 The Prime Minister, Mr Churchill, today gave the Japanese Ambassador the British reply to Mr Matsuoka’s persona] message to Mr Eden, after which certain Japanese circles in London said they were “well pleased with Mr Churchill’s reply, and also with the whole interview.” Both Mr Churchill and the Ambassador gave assurances that their countries desire to avoid a conflict in the Far East. Mr Churchill explained the purely precautionary nature of the British, American and Allied reinforcements in the Far East. Nothing official has been stated from the British side, but the Japanese have been left in no doubt that Britain is determined to end the war only by victory. Mr Churchill has the material to convince the Japanese that Britain every day is growing stronger to fulfil her purpose.
