91st BIRTHDAY

TARANAKI PIONEER A well-known pioneer of Kaponga, Taranaki, celebrated her 91st birthday on Monday. She is Mrs Catharine Cleland, mother of Mr Harold Cleland, of Gordonton. Mrs Cleland, sen., who is the second daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Thomas Burt, was born at Lower Hutt. where she married Mr Robert Cleland in 1871. In 1893 the family moved to Taranaki, settling at Kaponga on the Manaia Road, where some of her sons are still farming the old homestead. Mrs Cleland, who enjoys wonderful health, takes a keen interest in current affairs. She paid a visit to Hamilton just before Christmas to see her sons.

There is a family of seven sons and two daughters. They are Mesdames Hill, (Rowan), Lewis (Dargaville), Messrs Harold Cleland (Gordonton), Hugh Cleland (Stratford), Thomas Cleland (Te Uku), Fred Cleland (Kio Kio), Bernie Cleland (Kaponga) and Arthur Cleland (Stratford).
