NOT A CANDIDATE

MAYOR OF CHRISTCHURCH (By Tclegrapli.—special to Times) CHRISTCHURCH, Monday After an announcement in a letter by the Mayor of Christchurch, Mr R. M. Macfarlane, M.P., that he would not be a candidate, Mr E. Parlane, the chairman of the works committee of the City Council, was selected to be the Labour Party’s candidate for the mayoralty. Originally, nine were nominated for the mayoralty but Mr Macfarlane and Mr J. E. Jones withdrew before the ballot. The remaining seven nominations for the mayoralty of the city were not announced in the report of the meeting, but it is understood that others who went to the ballot were: Miss M. H. Howard, Messrs J. S. Barnett (deputy-Mayor), T. H. McCombs, M.P., J. Mathison, G. Manning and H. E. Denton. Mr Macfarlane was not present at the ballot, but in a letter read to delegates, he said that he would not know definitely until March, when his training was completed, that he would be going overseas. He felt that he would be fit but, in the circumstances, he felt that he should withdraw his nomination for the mayoralty, although he was encouraged by a large number of organisations to stand. He thanked those organisations for their support.
