FALSE PRETENCES
GRANTING OF PROBATION (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Thursday Found guilty of obtaining two bales of stockingette, valued at £l5O, by false pretences, Anthony Hoggart, ! aged 26, a merchant, was admitted j to 12 months’ probation by Mr Justice Johnston in the Supreme Court j today. Hoggart was also ordered to , pay the costs of the prosecution, j £9 11s 6d. His Honour said he granted proba- ! tion solely on the jury’-s recommen- j dation and he had grave doubts whether Hoggart was the type of man who would benefit by probation. PAINTER SENT TO GAOL Four months’ imprisonment was imposed by Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., on Leonard Henry George England, aged 39, a painter, who pleaded guilty to nine charges of obtaining at Christchurch goods and money by false pretences with cheques. The sentences were one month on each of 1 the four major charges, the terms to j be cumulative, with conx’iction and discharge on the others. The amount j involved was £33 14s 6d.
