ENTERTAINMENTS

TONIGHT’S PROGRAMMES STATE THEATRE “Hollywood Hotel” is an entertaining combination of catchy songs, magnificent settings, two famous band organisations, a swiftly paced inside story of Hollywood life, and a starstudded cast headed by Dick Powell and Louella O. Parsons. “Speed to Burn” introduces a new screen family, the Gambinis, destined for immediate favour in the affections of filmgoers. Into the lives of the Gambinis comes the love of a man for his girl, the dauntless faith of a boy in his gallant thoroughbred, and the thrill of an exciting victory “RHYTHM OF THE SADDLE” Popular Gene Autry, the singing cowboy, is at his best in “Rhythm of the Saddle,” which will be screened tomorrow REGENT THEATRE “The Amazing Mr Williams” is a very enjoyable film. The man of the title is, in reality, Melvyn Douglas, and Mr Douglas is co-starred with lovely Joan Blondell. Miss Blondeli’s role calls for her to be the brisk, efficient secretary to a big city’s mayor. In her extra-office life, she is a sharp, intelligent young woman whose only sign of faulty intelligence rests —as far as the scoffers are concerned—in the fact that she is in love with, and wants to marry, “The Amazing Mr Williams.” And that blithe super-sleuth is much too busy solving mysterious crimes to bother with so trivial a matter as wedding bells! “DR. KILDARE GOES HOME” “Dr. Kildare Goes Home,” another of the popular series of Dr. Kildare films, will head the new programme tomorrow. Lew Ayres and Lionel Barrymore are again featured. THEATRE ROYAL “Romance of the Redwoods,” with Charles Bickford and Jean Parker in the leading roles is concerned with the dual conflicts of man against himself and man against nature, all for the love of a woman. “The Missing Guest” deals with the efforts of a reporter to solve a mystery, and sparkles with hilarious scenes of comedy set against the spooky background of a mysterious ghost house. It features Paul Kelly, William Lundigan, Constance Moore, Edward Stanley, Selmer Jackson, Patrick J. Kelly, Harlan Briggs and other well-known players. “IF I HAD MY WAY” Bing Crosby and Gloria Jean, who were so successful in “The Under Pup,” have the leads in “If I Had My Way,” which, with “Blondie Has Servant Trouble,” will comprise the programme tomorrow. CIVIC THEATRE “The Great Profile” is the hilarious story of a famous stage Romeo whose nagging wife heckles him so persistently and fiercely that he goes berserk on the stage. He winds up by making the whole nation howl with amusement as he burlesques and brawls his way on to the nation’s front pages. The brilliant John Barrymore has the title role Mary Beth Hughes, a beautiful young player, heads the featured cast. In her role as the great profile’s nagging Wife she is very successful. Others reported to turn in fine performances are Gregory Ratoff, John Payne, Anne Baxter and Lionel Atwill. Walter Lang directed and Raymond Griffith served as associate producer. “I MARRIED A NAZI”

“I Married a Nazi,” a very powerful story featuring Joan Bennett Francis Lederer and Otto Kruger will be screened tomorrow.

ROXY THEATRE “Women in the Wind” deals entertainingly with women aviators. The air of factual authenticity is furthered by the finish, of a recordbreaking flight around the world, the breaking of the trans-Atlantic record by an ingenious young flyer who claims he did not know he was flying across the ocean, and the winning of a women’s transcontinental aii derby by a young and very personable aviatrix. “Honeymoon Deferred” is a murder mystery in which Edmund Lowe and Margaret Lindsay appear as the detective and his bride whose honeymoon is by the suspected murder of Lowe’s wealthy employer. “FOR FREEDOM” “For Freedom,” in which the men of H.M.S. Achilles play a prominent part, and “Raffles, with David Niven and Olivia de Havilland in the leading roles, will be screened tomorrow.
