LOCAL AND GENERAL

No Bill Returned Following a direction by Mr Justice Blair, the Grand Jury in the j Supreme Court, Auckland, yesterday returned a no bill in the charge I against John Henry Silva of the at- j tempted murder of a warder at the . Auckland Prison. j Church Diamond Jubilee The 60th anniversary of the estab- j lishment of the Paeroa Presbyterian Church is to be celebrated on March j 31, when the Very Rev. G. H. Jupp. j Moderator of the General Assembly, ; will be present. The Rev. T. H. Spear will represent the Waikato Presbytery. Motions of Condolence The Waikato Presbytery yesterday passed a resolution of sympathy with the relatives of the late Rev. Ben- | jamin Hotson, who some years ago j was minister at Te Awamutu. Sympathy was expressed also with the ; Revs. A. McKenzie and E. H. Kedg- ; ley, who have recently suffered be- I reavement. Lengthy Service It was reported to the Waikato j Presbytery yesterday that the Rev. j J. H. Mclntyre, of Paeroa, had com- j pleted 27 years’ service as a Sunday ; School teacher. It was agreed to j apply to the General Assembly for a j long-service certificate, which will be j presented at the Diamond Jubilee j services of the Church on March 31. Child Allowance The new Army allowance of Is 6d j a day for schoolchildren up to the ! age of i 8 years applies not only to i the New Zealand Expeditionary ! Force, but also to home service personnel. The Army Department states that the allowance refers only to children attending schools as day pupils. Unfortunate Start For one Hamilton schoolchild at least the opening of school for the new year was no matter for rejoicing. While playing in the grounds of the Whitiora School yesterday, Leslie James Perks, aged eight, the son of Mr F. Perks, of Ulster Street, Hamilton, fell and received a fractured leg. The injured boy was admitted to the Waikato Hospital. Comforts For Troops More than 24,000 balaclavas and over 24,000 pairs of mittens, as well as over 14,000 scarves, have now been sent overseas for the New Zealand troops from the National Patriotic Fund Board’s goods store in Wellington to the board’s commissioner, Lieutenant-Colonel the Hon. F. Waite. These warm knitted articles are the work of the women and girls of the Dominion and of the Cook Islands. He Did Not Know A farmer appellant before the No. 2 Armed Forces Appeal Board, at Hamilton today, was being questioned as to how his farm would fare if he was called to serve with the armed forces. He replied that he did not know. “ What if you were incapacitated for, say, several months?” asked the chairman, Mr S. L. Paterson. Appellant, who was operating three farms, said he had got so used to doing the job on the farms that he endeavoured to carry on without worrying over possible incapacitation. Beneficial Rain Gardens and crops benefited by last night’s warm rain, as the dry spell was beginning to cause local growers some concern. The rain was also welcomed because of the effect it had of cooling the muggy atmosphere. Yesterday was again very sultry, and at one stage the thermometer recorded 80 degrees. Today was much more pleasant, however, on account of the cooler weather. For the 24 hours which ended at 9 o’clock this morning .15in. of rain was recorded. The barometer is rising again. Three Sons Serving

With the entry into camp of Bruce Paterson, Mr and Mrs R. R. Paterson, of Hamilton, have three sons serving with the Armed Forces. Douglas Paterson is serving in the Middle East and Bob Paterson is in England. The latter recently played in the New Zealand Army Rugby team, and as both Douglas and Bruce have represented Hamilton and Waikato on the Rugby field they should also be prominently associated with Army teams in due course. Before leaving New Zealand Bob Paterson played representative football for both Hamilton and Wellington. Goods Not Yet Claimed With the owners unaware, because of the non-arrival of shipping documents, that their goods have arrived, hundreds of tons of unclaimed cargo lie in sheds on the Auckland wharves. Demurrage and other charges have accumulated, and a further problem is that ordinary marine insurance lapses when goods have been taken out of the ship’s hold for 15 days. The Auckland Harbour Board, whose officials are familiar with the established marks of many firms, has been able to inform large numbers of consignees of the arrival of goods. Previous Murder Trial The last occasion, referred to by Mr Justice Smith in the Supreme Court, Hamilton, yesterday, on which a murder case was heard in Hamilton, was on February 17, 1936, before Mr Justice Callan, when a young Chinese woman, Olive May Kung You, was charged with the murder of her two-months-old child at Taumarunui in the previous December. After the Crown had presented its case the Judge informed the jury that there was no dispute concerning the killing and the only question was of the woman’s sanity. Without retiring the jury returned a verdict of not guilty on the ground of insanity.
