line stave and gave names to the seven notes of the musical scale: Ut, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, Sa. Later, Sa became Si, which, in turn, changed to Ti; while Ut became Do, excepting in France. The first notes used in conjunction with the four-line stave were called large, long breve, and semi-breve. The introduction of our modern oval and round-headed notes began about the first of the 18th century.
