KEEPING APPLES ON TREES Growth substances such as naphthaleneacetic acid and napthaleneacetimide when applied in the form of a spray are very effective in preventing apples from dropping immediately before harvesting, according to research officers of the United States Horticulture Station of the Bureau of Plant Industry. These substances came into practical use a little more than three years ago when it was discovered that root cuttings difficult to root could be induced to produce growing shoots if soaked first in a solution containing the acids.
