SEVEN BAGS DAMAGED MOST OF LETTERS DELIVERED i ßy Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Monday Mails for Wellington, Christchurch and Auckland which left Nelson on Saturday evening by the Arahura, containing letters and parcels, were damaged by fire and subsequently by water. Two slings of mail were put in the hold under the usual supervision at 7.30 p.m., and at 8 p.m. smoke was seen issuing from them. They were hoisted on decck, where the lire was extinguished. Seven bags were seriously damaged out of 14. The majority of the letters have already been sent to their ! addresses, but an endeavour has j still to be made to deliver two bags- j l'ul of parcels with damaged j addresses. Nothing in the hold but mail was j damaged, but the fire apparently ! started in one of the bags then;- 1 selves. Inquiries reveal that the fire does not appear to have been thej result o i sabotage.
