NO COMPULSION
THEATRE EMPLOYEES DENIAL BY MANAGEMENT The proprietors of the Theatre Royal, in reply to allegations of compulsion made by Mr N. A. Holdaway, the Waikato branch secretary of the Auckland Houses of Entertainment and Places of Amusement Employees’ Union, state that there is no truth in his statement that the Theatre Royal employees were compelled to work without pay at the patriotic concert held in that theatre on October 24. The reply is made: “ in fairness to the employees concerned, and is based on the independent statement of each member of the staff referred to by Mr Holdaway.” The proprietors also wished to clear any misapprehension concerning the statement that these employees are being paid less than £2 a week. In no instance was any one of these employees solely dependent on this remuneration. Their duties were carried out in the evenings, and each one had an additional remuneration from his or her occupation during the day.
