EMPIRE PARADE

HISTORIC PAGEANT PRODUCTION IN HAMILTON PATRIOTIC PRESENTATION Great interest is being taken in the production in Hamilton next week of the Pageant of Empire. Written by Mr R. Braithwaite, of Hamilton, and produced by local talent, the Pageant portrays the deeds which laid the foundation of the British Empire. Although there were difficulties to be overcome, by reason of the different periods and the necessity for complete new costuming for every scene, the whole has been welded perfectly to make an outstanding spectacle. Before each scene a chronicler will announce the theme and the scene will then be played. The emphasis is on the Empire’s successful struggle throughout the ages for freedom. First in England the coming of Christianity and the people’s liberation from the tyrannical Kings is portrayed by the sealing of Magna Carta, and then i follows the rise of Parliament against Charles 1. The third scene depics England’s continued struggle for freedom—this time against aggression —when, during Queen Elizabeth’s reign, the Spanish Armada was crushed. The Civil War, when Parliament rose in arms against an attempt to usurp its rights and privileges, is the theme for the fourth scene and the final presentation j shows the reign of Queen Elizabeth ! and the spread of the British Empire. In the prologue and epilogue are depicted scenes of the evacuation of Dunkirk, which meant so much for the cause of freedom which the Empire has cherished through the ages. The Pageant will be staged in the Theatre Royal on November 5. 6 and 7, and the proceeds will be devoted to patriotic funds. Already there is a keen inquiry for seats, as it is being realised that the heroism, adventuresome spirit, appreciation of justice, gift for good democratic government and, above ; all, the noble determination of mod- | ern Britons to preserve the heritage of fame that has been handed in trust | to them, will provide a thrill of pride 1 which few other entertainments could give.
