Palmerston North Bankruptcy There was one petition in bankruptcy filed at the office of the Deputy Official Assignee in Palmerston North last month, as compared with none in October of last year. Vital Statistics Following are the vital statistics for Cambridge for the month of October, 1940, with those of the j corresponding month of last year ' given in parenthesis:—Births 14 (11), i deaths 3 (5), marriages 7 (2). | Estate of £30,000 The will of the late Mr N. Kettle, who died on September 27, retired company manager and one of the : founders of the Hawke’s Bay firm of Williams and Kettle, Limited, has been sworn for probate at under I £30,000. Fewer Fires The Hamilton Fire Brigade experi- : enced a comparatively easy month during October, attending only two ] refuse fires. 1 For the corresponding I month last year the brigade received j calls to three property fires and seven refuse fires, and one accidental false alarm was sounded. National Fund A sixth instalment of £3OO paid to the National Patriotic Fund by the : staffs of the Post and Telegraph De- j partment brings their contribution to ; date to £2IOO. Sundry amounts from ! the Public Service total £597, and the whole fund at October 29 stood ] at £159,783. Two Bankruptcies * Two bankruptcies were filed m Hamilton last month, the petitioners being a mechanic and a sharemilker. In October last year four bankruptcies were filed, the petitioners being a carpenter, a milking machine dealer, a mill hand and a motor driver. Patriotic Ball A grand patriotic ball is to be held in the Alexandra Hall to-morrow night under the auspices of the Citizens’ Queen, Mrs Colin Taylor, and it is hoped that by a large attendance the patriotic funds will be appreciably augmented. All citizens are invited, the host and hostess being the Mayor and Mayoress of Hamilton, Mr and Mrs H. D. Caro. Divorces Granted Based on agreements to separate, two actions in divorce were heard before Mr Justice Blair in the Supreme Court, Hamilton, today. Decrees nisi were granted in both cases, in which the parties were: Mary Ellen Amelia Brown (Mr J. F. Strang) v. Leslie Arthur Brown; Ida Elizabeth Ramsey (Mr J. F. Strang) v. Horace Edmundi Ramsey. More Births, Fewer Deaths A sharp increase in the number of births and a decrease in the number of marriages were features of the vital statistics for October in Hamilton. Births rose from 67 in October, 1939, to 82 last month, while deaths dropped from 38 to 28. In October last year 37 marriages were registered, compared with 25 last month. Of last month’s marriages six were performed by the registrar, as against five in October last year. Queen Carnival Day As a result of a special meeting of representatives of the nurses’, citizens’ and country queen committees last night a complete agreement was reached on all points in connection with the organisation of the grand patriotic parade and carnival day which will be held at the Lake on November 9. It was decided that the organisation be retained by the citizens’ queen committee, as the representative of the other two committees were well satisfied with the arrangements made by the citizens’ committee.
