AMATEUR ATHLETICS

THE HAMILTON CLUB j

MANY NEW MEMBERS APPEAR TROW AND II ED LEY AGAIN (By “Nurmi”) Held under scratch conditions, last Saturday* meeting ol' the Hamilton club augurs well fur this formidable combination when the sterner contests ensue. To replace numerous good performers now en route to Berlin, quite a team of new talent has appeared. In addition It is pleasing to record the acquisition of several active officials. It would appear now that the high athletic ■standard W the Hamilton club will be well maintained aguin this season. New Members This list includes N. Sundvick, the young C. harrier, J. McKinley, IM. Kennelly. N. L. Saunders (.well performed Hamilton harriers junior). \\. Fowler (younger brother of the good sprinter;, !■'. Buck* Ingham (las-t but not least or the famous a.hletic family , W. Hood, B. Cowley, F. Barry, R. Norman, P. Kirk and A. Waterson. Ii Fs a trifle early, yet to write or capabilities, but young Fowler looks the cut of a sprinter and will disappoint if he does not go well later. Sundvick and McKinley both raced well in the mile. Kennelly and Saunders showed to advantage ln‘ the hurdles, as did Hood in the oilier hurdle race. Young Buckingham' has already a li-t of sucte-s-es in school ev- nts, including a record or 'two. Tine oilier- are schoolboys and as keen as Ex-Champions Reappear A very pleasing feature of Saturday's meeting w;i- the appearance of E. K. Trow and J. -Medley. Trow is the former holder of the Waikato three-miles title, as well as ihe Waikato C.C.C. title. lledle.v has held Waikato championships and records m almost every llekl event, and his 13511 with Ihe javelin last wet k looked pretty good for later. in practice with the big shot after the meeting Jim popped out a neat 37ft Sin, so that our field events team lia* again a very useful member! Both Trow and Medley intend to compete wherever possible and their presence will lent interest to any event. New Officials Too Not for some years have so many new and keen officials offered their services. Additions last Saturday were Messrs R. Mercer (formerly of Dunedin, 'home town of Ray Manderson), Wareham (president of the Dannevirke Athletic Club, noxv transferred here), F. Smith, J. Bee and D. Shooter. The latter will officiate as handicapper and possibly starter, and as “Nurmi” knows his worth as handicapper for harrier events, the club Is fortunate to secure his services. • "Cock o’ the North” Contest A new competition will commence this week when the “Cock o’ the North” will be instituted. Tlie idea behind this contest is to induce those competitors who specialise in one event to have an occasional venture in a new field. The Idea is that, say for instance, skipper Roy Dent is the holder. The committee decide secretly upon a certain event. Without knowing what event they are likely to have to compete in, ten members (they must be financial) challenge. From the ten, three are drawn from a hat. The three might be Hodgson, Fowler and Poultney. The treasurer might then announce that the contest is to be the pole event. “Nurmi” can visualise a certain amount of humour arising from this, as all four are duty bound to do their best and probably or' the four two might be average performers and the other two comparative novices. The winner each week will wear a cock pheasant badge, while a similar Insignia is allocated the women. Entrance is free, the only condition being that to enter you must have already paid your subscription. The treasurer, Mr Rex Thompson, hast never been known to decline a subscription. Still he might do some day. Try him next week and see. THE HAMILTON CLUB HANDICAPS FOR SATURDAY The Hamilton Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club will continue its activities at Hlnemoa Park, tomorrow. Interest In the events will he greatly increased by the fact that the points for the various points trophies commence with this meeting. A win will count five points, second place three, and third one. The following marks have been declared by the handicapper (Mr D. C. Shooter): — lun Yards.
