DUCK-SIIOOTING NEXT YEAR j NORTH ISLAND SOCIETIES (By Telegrapn.—Special to Times) WELLINGTON, Monday j A two-week open season for duck- . shoting, extended to include three i week-ends, will be sought by the j council of the North Island Acclimaj tisation Societies for the next year, i It was decided at the conference of j the council to ask the Minister of In- | ternal Affairs for such an arrangement. j The chairman, Mr F. C. McKenzie, | Auckland, moved that the Minister jbe asked to review the beneficial ! effects of the short 1940 duck season, | particularly in regard to its effect i upon earlier pairing of the ducks and j resultant double clutches, the saving j of perhaps a quarter of the ducks j otherwise shot, the effect of food- ' plant propagation by societies, the ! maintained duck population where j suitable habitat existed, the improved i ranging and urgent need of revenue ; to pay for it, and the increased effic- | iency of vermin control, j Mr McKenzie said the Auckland | society would like a permanent shooti ing season of a fortnight. \ Mr S. J. Snow, Whangarei, said | the Northern Federation was in favI our of a fortnight’s season for all time. All their birds were shot in I the first few days of the season. For | the rest of the season the ducks con- | gregated in thousands out at sea.
