SOLDIERS’ AID

UNIFORM PROCEDURE i t GUIDE FOR ZONE COMMITTEES j i c TEMPORARY ASSISTANCE Emphasising that any assistance 4 from p atriotic funds will be tern- i porary, the Auckland Provincial Pat- ' riotic Council has adopted a uniform method, for the guidance of zone committees, of dealing with applications for assistance from members of the armed forces or their dependents, j Inter-zone sub-committees are ! urged to ascertain what measures of I Government help may be available, see that application has been made for it and give every co-operation in obtaining that assistance for the application at the earliest possible moment. These sub-committces may then • « grant some form of assistance for a period not exceeding four weeks. ! ■ Provision is made for special cases where a longer period of relief may be required. The maximum relief : to be given by these sub-committees to any individual in any one week is 1 not to exceed the following amounts: Widow or wife. £2: male applicant, £2. his wife. £1: each dependant child, 10s; maximum for any one family, £5. ' ; | The sub-committees have been ■ [supplied with copies of recommenda- ! tions of a national patriotic conference held in Wellington in May. I These are as follows: That, as a gen- : ! eral principle, monetary grants should not be made to men on the!r discharge; that length of war service be not taken into account when consideration is. being given to applications for relief; that loans to assist men setting up a business, erecting residences, purchasing farms, etc., be strongly discouraged: that grants for , the establishment of soldiers’ clubs be discouraged. Endeavours should be made to obtain the co-operation of those now controlling present j soldiers’ clubs for the benefit of the i men returning from the present war.
