LOCAL AND GENERAL

Sports Gear Wanted With five military camps in the Waikato area alone, sporting equipment for the benefit of troops is urgently required. At all camps there is sufficient ground for many sports to be played and donations of equipment would be greatly appreciated. The gifts may be left at the Patriotic House in Garden Place. Donation by Chemists Appreciation of the action of the chemists of New Zealand in donating £1477 to purchase and equip ambulances for the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force was expressed on behalf of the Government to-day by the Minister of Finance, the Hon. W. Nash. Church Leader’s Visit » Lieutenant Commissioner and Mrs J. Evan Smith, Territorial Leaders of the Salvation Army in New Zealand, will visit Hamilton next Sunday, and will conduct a series of special gatherings at the Citadel. Lieut. Commissioner Smith served the founder, William Booth, as private secretary, as well as the second leader, Bramwell Booth, and subsequently spent periods in South Africa as Chief Secretary and in Wales as Commander. Licenses To Sell Stamps Persons and firms to whom licenses for the sale of stamps have been issued are reminded that all such licenses expire on Thursday, October 17, and must be replaced, if the sale of stamps is to be continued, by new licenses obtainable from the Post Office. The regulations require that persons and firms in business as stamp dealers, that is, persons and firms trading with stamp collectors and others in currently recognised and obsolete stamps, also require licenses obtainable from the Post Office. Wild Life Control Paying an official visit to Whangarei, the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. E. Parry, met representatives of the Harbour Board and the Acclimatisation Society to discuss a proposal by the board that the harbour area be declared a bird sanctuary. The Acclimatisation Society agreed to the closing of the area for a period. The Minister today made a launch tour in order to secure firsthand information. Mr Parry emphasised the need for measures to preserve bird life, and expressed willingness to create a department of wild life to achieve that object. He goes to Kaitaia tomorrow in connection with a centennial memorial.
