DRAINAGE INQUIRY
OUTER SEWERAGE SYSTEM POSTPONEMENT URGED Representatives of the Hamilton Borough Council, the Waikato and Waipa County Councils and the Fairfield Ratepayers and Progress League were in attendance when the committee of the Board of Health opened its inquiry in Hamilton today into the provision of public conveniences and the extension of the borough drainage system. The committee consists of the Hon. J. Alexander. M.L.C. (chairman), Mr F. W. Mac Lean and Dr. T. R. Ritchie (representing the Director-General of Health). Mr H. A. Swarbrick, representing the two county councils, suggested that the inquiry into the extension of the sewerage system to areas outside the Hamilton borough be postponed until the parties concerned could obtain some useful evidence. The question of extending the sewerage outside the borough boundaries was additional to the borough’s proposals for Hamilton, and no conference had been held between the local bodies affected to enable any agreement to be reached. Some years ago the council had extended the sewerage into areas that had become closely settled, said Mr F. A. Swarbrick, who lepresented the Hamilton Borough Council. Had the ratepayers approved the £IO,OOO loan, sewerage would have been available for every section in Hamilton. Apart from sewerage extensions, the council had sought sanction to provide other amenities. The suburbs of Hamilton Last t .nd Hamilton West, for instance, were poorly placed ao far as rest looms were concerned. The inquiry js proceeding.
