TWO YOUNG SAILORS j J JOURNEY DOWN COAST BOAT FOUND BADLY SMASHED (By TelerrapU.—Special to Times) GISBORNE, Sunday The discovery of a small boat badly smashed by the sea on the Nuhaka beach yesterday has provided the sequel to a mid-week storm in which two young men are believed to have perished while en route from Portland Island to Waikokopu. The two men are Mr Ralph Nevill, aged 19, son of Mr William Nevill, farmer, whose home is on Portland Island, and Mr George Poipoi, aged 23, a Maori, of the Wairoa district. The men left Portland Island early on Wednesday before the storm then gathering had shown more than a trace of its strength. Their boat -was a light craft fitted with an outboard motor and when last sighted from Portland Island it was making good progress along the coast of Mania Peninsula toward Waikokopu. The storm aroused concern for the safety of the men and the postmaster at Waikokopu and police stations along the northern portion of the Hawke’s Bay coast were advised to keep a watch for the boat. Mr Nevill, senior, used a radio telephone in communicating with the postmaster. IN BLAZING ROOM SMALL GIRL’S FATE FATHER’S RESCUE ATTEMPT (By Telejrapn.— special to Times) AUCKLAND, Sunday A five-year-old girl died in the Auckland Hospital this evening from extensive burns to the head, body and limbs, received in a fire which broke out in her home at Birkenhead this afternoon. The girl was Margaret Josephine Brljevich, daughter of Mr and Mrs Ante Brljevich, of 9 Waipa Street, Birkenhead. While her parents were in the garden, the child was playing in her bedroom. Suddenly she ran out, crying that the bedding was on fire. Before her father could reach the house, however, she had run into the room again, slamming the door behind her. It jammed and could not be opened. By this time the room was blazing fiercely and the house was filled with smoke. Mr Brljevich finally managed to force open the door, and, suffering slight burns himself, carried his daughter out. The Birkenhead fire brigade arrived be. ore the fire had spread to the rest of die house. YOUTH DROWNED BOAT OVERTURNS IN SQUALL (,By Telegraph.—Special to Times) AUCKLAND, Sunday A youth was drowned when his boat was struck by a heavy squall and overturned in the Manukau Harbour off Hillsborough Point this morning. The victim was Vernon Walford Hinsley, sheetmetal worker, aged 20, of 191 Church Street, Onebunga. Four other youths who were in the boat were rescued by two small craft after long periods in a boisterous sea. FATAL COLLISION ELDERLY MOTOR-CYCLIST (By Telegraph.—special to Timee) AUCKLAND, Sunday An elderly motor-cyclist who collided with a motor-car in Dominion Road yesterday afternoon suffered Injuries from which he died in the Auckland Hospital this morning. He was Mr Herbert Edward Kinzett, boot repair shop proprietor, aged 69, of 318 Dominion Road.
